The historic Churchill Downs turf course is set to host a compelling edition of the G3 Arlington Stakes on Saturday, May 31, 2025. A field of nine seasoned older horses will contest the 1-1/16 mile event, vying for a significant $275,000 purse.
Topping the morning line is the formidable Mercante, who brings top-tier graded stakes form into the race and looks like a deserving favorite. However, Mercante will face a stern test from a cadre of talented challengers.
Among them, Brilliant Berti, a winner of the Opening Verse Stakes over this course, and Lagynos, consistently in the mix in stakes company, appear poised to make their presence felt.
With several runners bringing strong recent performances, the Arlington promises to be a thrilling turf battle for four-year-olds and upward.
The Field
Here’s a closer look at the contenders for the G3 Arlington Stakes, listed by post position with morning line odds:
1. Event Detail (20/1) – Owned by OXO Equine LLC and trained by William Walden, this son of City of Light has shown his best form on synthetic surfaces, including a recent win and a runner-up finish in optional claiming company at Turfway Park.
His two prior turf starts didn’t yield top results, but he’s stepping up significantly in class here. While he’s shown grit, the surface switch and the level of competition present formidable challenges. He’ll need a career-best effort on the grass to factor in.
2. Cameo Performance (6/1) – Trained by Brendan Walsh for Qatar Racing LLC, Fergus Galvin, and Marc Detampel, Cameo Performance was not too far off (three lengths) while finishing eighth in the G1 Turf Classic at this track. The Oscar Performance colt won the Audubon Stakes last year and has been consistently tested against high-caliber opposition.
His experience in graded stakes and experience over the Churchill turf make him a logical contender, though he sometimes finds one or two better.
3. Gigante (10/1) – This Not This Time five-year-old, trained by Steve Asmussen for Land N Racing LLC and Clark O. Brewster, is a proven graded stakes performer. He was a game second, beaten just a neck, in the G2 Muniz Memorial two back, finishing ahead of Cameo Performance.
Gigante is a model of consistency. He rarely runs a bad race, and his tactical speed allows him to adapt to different pace scenarios. He offers good value at his morning line price and is a serious threat.
4. Herchee (6/1) – Representing 100% Racing Stable LLC and trainer Helen Pitts, Herchee comes into the Arlington off an impressive victory in a high-level allowance race at Keeneland. He’s finished behind Lagynos and Brilliant Berti in the three stakes he’s run.
He possesses good early speed, which could see him close to or vying for the lead, and has shown an apparent affinity for turf. The main question is whether he can replicate his recent sharp form against this tougher graded stakes group.
5. Lagynos (9/2) – Another strong contender from the Steve Asmussen barn, Lagynos races for HRH Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud. The Kantharos colt was runner-up in the Opening Verse Stakes at Churchill Downs last out, finishing behind Brilliant Berti.
He won the Woodchopper Stakes at Fair Grounds and has consistently been in stakes races. His tactical versatility and proven class make him a key player, though he needs to find a bit more to turn recent placings into a win at this level.
6. Call Protection (8/1) – Trained by Michael Maker for Jordan V. Wycoff, Call Protection enters this contest on a two-race winning streak, including an optional claiming victory on the Churchill turf last month. The Good Samaritan colt has done his best work recently, showing improvement with each start.
This will be his toughest test to date, but his current form and Maker’s proficiency with turf runners suggest he could be ready for the step up.
7. Silent Heart (10/1) – This son of Heart to Heart, trained by Brian Lynch for Terry Hamilton and Koocanusa Ventures, is another who comes in with good recent form, having won an optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park. He also finished a close third in the G3 Canadian Turf Stakes earlier this year, behind recent G3 Dinner Party Stakes winner Fort Washington.
Silent Heart often shows good early speed and has proven competitive in graded stakes. He’ll need to transfer his Florida form effectively to Churchill Downs, but is capable of outrunning his odds.
8. Mercante (3/1) The morning-line favorite, Mercante, hails from the Brian Knippenberg stable for owner Carl F. Pollard. This Gun Runner five-year-old put in a stellar performance when finishing second in the G1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs, where Gigante and Cameo Performance finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Before that, he captured the G3 Kentucky Cup Classic at Turfway Park. His high Beyer Speed Figures and proven ability at the top level make him the horse to beat.
9. Brilliant Berti (7-2) Trained by Cherie DeVaux for Klein Racing, Brilliant Berti is a course specialist, having won all four races, including the Opening Verse Stakes over this track last out, defeating Lagynos. The Noble Mission colt also won the G3 Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland last year.
He’s exceptionally consistent, rarely finishing off the board, and his tactical speed, combined with a strong finishing kick, makes him a major threat in any turf contest he enters.
Win, Place, Show, Wildcard, and Longshot
Win: (8) Mercante (3/1) – His runner-up effort in the G1 Turf Classic was a top-class performance, and he backed it up with a G3 win prior. He seems to be in peak form, handles the Churchill turf, and possesses the class to overcome this field. His pace figures suggest he can be forwardly placed and tough to get by.
Place: (9) Brilliant Berti (7-2) – A proven winner over this course and distance, he just defeated Lagynos in the Opening Verse. His consistency is admirable; he always brings his ‘A’ game. He should be right there battling for the top spot.
Show: (3) Gigante (10/1) – Scratch his last one, and all others before make him an excellent value offer. He’s a grinder who consistently hits the board in tough spots and should close well to get a share.
Wildcard: (4) Herchee (6-1) – If the pace setters, including potentially Silent Heart and Mercante, go too fast early, Herchee has shown the ability to sit just off the speed and pounce. His last win was visually impressive, and if he gets the proper setup, he could spring a mild upset.
Longshot: (7) Silent Heart (10/1) – He has shown flashes of graded stakes quality, particularly his third in the Canadian Turf. He possesses good early speed, and if he can get comfortable on the lead or dictate a moderate pace, he might hang around for a much bigger piece than his odds suggest.
