Gallorette Glory: European Star Three Havanas Battles America’s Best Mares at Pimlico

A fascinating mix of European class and proven local graded stakes performers are set to clash in this year’s edition of the G3 Galorette Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 17, 2025.

The $150,000 event, carded as Race 7 with a post time of 12:16 pm ET, will see fillies and mares aged three and upward contest over 1-1/16 miles on the turf.

The spotlight shines brightly on German import Three Havanas (Ger), who is tabbed as the 5-2 morning line favorite. She makes her North American debut for the formidable Christophe Clement barn and boasts considerable graded stakes experience across Europe.

However, she’ll face stiff challenges from the likes of Way to Be Marie (3-1), a recent stakes winner in good form, and the speedy Queen of the Mud (Ire) (4-1), who looks to make her presence felt from the outset.

The Field

A field of nine has been entered for the G3 Galorette Stakes:

1. Dana’s Beauty (6-1) This hard-trying mare, trained by Michael Maker, benefits from the rail draw, giving jockey Jose Ortiz early options. While she’s shown versatility and form, this marks her first start on this turf course, and she faces a class jump. Her ability to handle a potentially fast pace will be key, though her trainer has a modest 6% win rate in graded stakes.

2. Queen of the Mud (Ire) (4-1) Trained by H. Graham Motion, this 5-year-old mare possesses significant early speed and won her only previous route attempt just off the pace. She’s lightly raced for her age, making only her tenth start, and showed promise in her lone Pimlico appearance. The added distance is a question, but her pedigree (half-brother is multiple millionaire Facteur Cheval) suggests she could handle it. Expect jockey Flavien Prat to be aggressive from the inside.

3. Ocean Club (15-1) Another runner with some early speed, this Curlin mare has graded stakes experience. However, she raced evenly in her last start and now draws a difficult post between other speedsters. With John Velazquez taking the mount for trainer Bethany Baumgardner, she’ll need to find improvement to contend.

4. Charlene’s Dream (20-1) This filly has shown a tendency to be on or near the lead in her turf starts. She makes her 8th career start with potential upside on the turf, supported by strong Tomlinson figures for the surface. However, she’s returning from a long layoff and steps into graded stakes company for the first time, making this a challenging spot.

5. Conquest Dancer (30-1) Making her turf debut for trainer Charles A. Frock, connections might be hoping for this race to be moved off the turf. Her sire, Frosted, has a 10% strike rate with first-time turf runners, and her dam had limited success on grass. Her best recent efforts have been on the front end, a position likely to be contested here.

6. Austere (8-1) Trained by Brendan Walsh, this filly was tested in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in only her third start, finishing just two lengths behind. Her recent form is described as “only OK,” but a return to turf and the services of Irad Ortiz Jr. (36% with this barn) are positives. She prefers to pass horses, and the expected pace setup could be to her liking.

7. Three Havanas (Ger) (5-2) The morning-line favorite makes her North American debut for trainer Christophe Clement, who has a 20% success rate with such runners. This filly has been prominent in many of her European starts and possesses graded stakes experience. With Joel Rosario in the irons and a series of encouraging works, there’s a lot to like about her chances.

8. Sparkle Blue (5-1) A consistent performer for trainer H. Graham Motion, this mare loves to pass runners and boasts graded stakes experience with solid Beyer figures. The distance should pose no problem, and she retains her regular rider, Jorge Ruiz. She was denied a clean trip off a layoff two starts back and has a clear will to win.

9. Way to Be Marie (3-1) Coming off a stakes win for trainer Rob Atras, this filly could get an ideal trip just off the pace. The trainer has a 21% strike rate in graded stakes and a 26% win rate with horses that won their last start. Jockey Junior Alvarado appears to be a good fit for this in-form contender.

Win, Place, Show, Wildcard, and Longshot

Win: (7) Three Havanas (Ger) (5-2) The European shipper brings a strong profile to her U.S. debut. With a top trainer known for success with imports, proven graded stakes ability overseas, and encouraging workouts, she looks poised for a big effort under Joel Rosario.

Place: (9) Way to Be Marie (3-1) She enters this race in sharp form, having won the Tom Benson Memorial Stakes in her last outing. Trainer Rob Atras does well with last-out winners and in graded stakes, and she projects to get a favorable stalking trip.

Show: (8) Sparkle Blue (5-1) A model of consistency, this mare has a knack for finding the winner’s circle and always puts in a determined run. She has proven graded stakes credentials, will appreciate the distance, and should be closing strongly.

Wildcard: (2) Queen of the Mud (Ire) (4-1) If she can harness her considerable early speed and get clear on the front end without too much pressure, this lightly raced mare has the potential to steal it. Her pedigree suggests the distance is within reach, and an uncontested lead could make her very dangerous.

Longshot: (4) Charlene’s Dream (20-1) While she faces a tough assignment coming off a layoff and into graded stakes company for the first time, her Tomlinson ratings for turf are strong, and she has shown early speed in her grass starts. If she’s ready off the bench and takes to the class hike, she could surprise at big odds.
