Wide-Open Affair as Pennine Ridge Moves to Dirt

A dramatic turn of events has reshaped Saturday’s Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes at Saratoga, as weather conditions have forced the race off the turf and onto the main dirt track.

The surface change prompted the scratches of four key contenders, leaving a compact and competitive field of six to vie for the winner’s share of the $300,000 purse.

With the race now contested on dirt, the entire dynamic has shifted. What was once a turf showdown is now a wide-open scramble where pedigree and limited dirt experience take center stage.

Noble Confessor, a well-bred maiden who has already placed on the Saratoga dirt track, now figures to be a prime contender in a race filled with question marks.

He’ll face challenges from horses like Mi Bago, the field’s established speed, and his own stablemate, Bulldoze, a colt with a terrific dirt pedigree making his first start on the surface.

The Field

2. A. P. Kid (10-1): His lone victory came in his only start on the turf. His single race on a fast dirt track was his career debut, where he finished a distant sixth. While his sire, Honor A. P., was a Grade 1 winner on dirt, A. P. Kid will need to show dramatic improvement from that first effort to be a factor here.

6. Bulldoze (30-1): This colt has never raced on dirt, with all three of his career starts coming on the grass. He broke his maiden impressively on the turf at Gulfstream Park two starts back. The major point in his favor is his pedigree; his sire, Nyquist, won the Kentucky Derby, suggesting he has every right to handle the main track. He is a complete wild card in this spot.

7. Mi Bago (6-1): He is the established speed in the race, though his record on the Saratoga dirt is not strong. In his only start on the surface, he finished a well-beaten sixth in the Funny Cide Stakes. His lone dirt victory came in his career debut at Colonial Downs. His speed makes him dangerous, but his ability to carry it over the Saratoga main track remains a question.

8. Golden Channel (20-1) His only non-turf start came on a synthetic track at Gulfstream Park. He has zero experience on a traditional dirt surface, and his sire, English Channel, is a renowned turf stallion. This surface switch presents a very difficult challenge for him.

9. Noble Confessor (12-1): Though still a maiden after five starts, he appears to be in a prime position here. Unlike many of his rivals, he has positive experience on the Saratoga dirt, having finished third in a maiden race last year. His sire is Quality Road, a top source of dirt talent, and trainer Todd Pletcher’s decision to run him here signals a high degree of confidence.

10. Thirteen Colonies (20-1): He enters off an impressive maiden-breaking victory on the Keeneland turf course. However, he has never raced on dirt, and his sire, Hit It a Bomb, was a Grade 1 winner on turf. Like others in this field, he faces a significant challenge in transitioning his form to the main track.

Win, Place, Show, Wildcard, and Longshot

Win: (9) Noble Confessor (12-1) – He appears to be the most logical winner, boasting a combination of dirt pedigree , positive experience on the Saratoga main track , and the confidence of his top-tier trainer.

Place: (6) Bulldoze (30-1) – This is a pure speculation play based on his excellent dirt pedigree. In a race with so many questions, his potential upside is immense, and he could be any kind of horse on this surface.

Show: (7) Mi Bago (6-1) – While his Saratoga dirt record is poor, he is the established speed of the race and a prior winner on dirt. He could clear the field and hold on for a share if he dictates the pace.

Wildcard: (2) A. P. Kid (10-1) – His only dirt race was poor, but it was his career debut. It is possible he has matured significantly since then and could run to the dirt ability of his sire, Honor A. P..

Longshot: (6) Bulldoze (30-1) – As a complete unknown on this surface but possessing a sire who won the Kentucky Derby, he is likely to be a high price and has the genetic makeup to pull off a sizable upset.
