The Dinner Party Stakes promises a highly competitive affair, drawing a diverse group of runners with established graded stakes credentials and others looking to make their mark at this level.
With a significant purse and Grade 3 status on the line, expect a tactical battle on the Pimlico turf as these accomplished runners vie for supremacy.
The Field
Here’s a closer look at the runners for the G3 Dinner Party Stakes:
1. Divin Propos (FR) (12-1) This French-bred gelding has shown ability on both sides of the Atlantic, hitting the board consistently in his native country before transitioning to Philip D’Amato’s barn. He recently finished second in the Grade 3 San Luis Rey, earning a 93 Beyer Speed Figure. While he’s proven effective against this caliber, he’ll need to be at his best to overcome a competitive field.
2. Crabs N Beer (30-1) A hard-knocking Maryland-bred, Crabs N Beer was second in this race last year, earning a notable 94 Beyer. He was recently ninth in the Henry Clark after a troubled trip. His affinity for the Pimlico course, where he’s hit the board in both his starts, makes him a potential longshot player if he gets a clean run.
3. Signator (8-1) This son of Tapit enters off a victory in the Henry Clark, where he earned an 89 Beyer. Trainer Claude “Shug” McGaughey III has found success moving him to the turf, where he is undefeated in two starts. McGaughey’s proficiency with last-out winners and horses coming off similar layoffs suggests Signator will be well-prepared for his first graded stakes test on the grass.
4. Neat (8-1) A multiple graded stakes winner, Neat boasts six victories from twelve turf starts. He encountered traffic trouble in his last start when fourth in the Henry Clark. Trained by Rob Atras, who has a good record with horses on turf and off layoffs, Neat could deliver an improved performance with a cleaner trip.
5. Abrumar (20-1) This colt finished third in the Appleton Stakes in his last outing, earning an 89 Beyer. He has been consistently competing in quality stakes races and previously finished third in the James W. Murphy Stakes over this Pimlico turf course. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has strong numbers with horses off similar layoffs, making Abrumar a consistent performer to watch.
6. Balnikhov (IRE) (9-2) The defending champion of this race, Balnikhov (IRE) won the 2024 edition with a 97 Beyer. Trained by Philip D’Amato, this Irish-bred gelding has appeared off form in recent starts but D’Amato’s success with layoff runners and in graded stakes suggests he could be ready to fire a big shot, though he might benefit from a race.
7. Cash Equity (FR) (15-1) Another French import, Cash Equity (FR) has a consistent record of 6 wins, 8 seconds, and 7 thirds from 36 starts. He earned an 88 Beyer for his fifth-place finish in the Pan American Stakes. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. excels with layoff horses and turf runners, and this gelding’s international form against tough company makes him an interesting contender for the exotics.
8. Crystal Quest (10-1) Crystal Quest enters this race off a determined win in the Tampa Turf Classic, earning a 95 Beyer. Trainer Michael Trombetta has a good record with last-out winners and horses coming off layoffs. This progressive type could take another step forward and be a factor. He was second in the J.W. Murphy Stakes at Pimlico last year.
9. Irish Aces (10-1) Coming off an allowance win at Keeneland where he set the pace and held on for a 95 Beyer, Irish Aces looks sharp. Trainer Brendan Walsh has solid statistics with horses off layoffs and last-out winners. His previous graded stakes efforts, including a close third in the Tampa Bay Stakes, show he belongs at this level and could be tough if allowed to dictate the pace.
10. Fort Washington (5-1) This War Front entire captured the Canadian Turf (G3) with a well-timed late surge, earning a 97 Beyer in his last start. He appears to be hitting his peak as a 6-year-old for trainer Shug McGaughey. McGaughey’s record with layoff horses and last-out winners is strong, making Fort Washington a major contender despite the break.
11. Fulmineo (12-1) Fulmineo won the J.W. Murphy Stakes over this course last year, demonstrating his ability to handle the Pimlico turf. He recently finished third in the Henry Clark, earning an 86 Beyer. Trainer Arnaud Delacour has good stats with horses coming off long layoffs and on turf, and the home track advantage makes him a logical contender.
12. Desvio (30-1) This colt earned an 83 Beyer for his sixth-place finish in the Henry Clark after a slow start. Trainer Madison Meyers has had success freshening this runner, and his adaptability to different turf courses is a plus. He could surprise at a big price if he breaks alertly.
13. Trikari (5-2) Trikari enters off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile, earning a 92 Beyer against top-class competition. Trained by H. Graham Motion, this colt possesses tactical speed which should allow him to get a good position despite the outside draw. Previous Grade 1 and Grade 2 wins highlight his class, making him a strong contender.
Win, Place, Show, Wildcard, and Longshot
Win: (13) Trikari (5-2) – Comes in with strong Grade 1 form, possesses tactical speed, and hails from the capable H. Graham Motion barn. His proven class against tougher company gives him the edge.
Place: (10) Fort Washington (5-1) – Closed impressively to win the Grade 3 Canadian Turf and seems to be in peak form for Shug McGaughey. He’s a serious threat if he continues his upward trajectory.
Show: (3) Signator (8-1) – Undefeated on turf and coming off a good win in the Henry Clark. Trainer Shug McGaughey is excellent with developing turf horses, and this one has significant upside.
Wildcard: (6) Balnikhov (IRE) (9-2) – As last year’s winner of this race, he clearly handles the course and distance well. While his recent form is a question, trainer Phil D’Amato is adept at having them ready off a layoff for targeted spots. If he returns to his best, he can absolutely repeat.
Longshot: (8) Crystal Quest (10-1) – Impressed with a 95 Beyer in his last win and has shown progression. His runner-up effort in the Murphy Stakes here last year proves his affinity for the course, and he could outrun his odds.
