OCEANPORT, N.J. – Making her first start in over seven months, Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding’s Whiskey Decision showed no signs of rust, displaying a powerful late kick to capture the $150,000 Eatontown Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park on Saturday.
The Chad Brown-trained filly saved ground throughout and surged along the inside rail in the stretch to win by a decisive two-length margin.
Under a patient ride from Samy Camacho, the 4-year-old daughter of Into Mischief settled comfortably on the inside as Damaso set the early pace, clocking the opening fractions in 24.39 and 49.23. Camacho guided Whiskey Decision off the rail as the field rounded the far turn to find a clear path.
In the stretch, a seam opened along the inside, and Whiskey Decision shot through, collaring the leaders and pulling away convincingly to stop the clock in 1:44.81 for the one-and-one-sixteenth-mile turf contest over a firm course.
“I had a perfect trip,” said Camacho. “Chad [Brown] told me to keep her covered up and save ground. When we turned for home, the rail opened up, and she just exploded. She’s a very nice filly, and she was ready today.”
The victory marked the first graded stakes win for Whiskey Decision, who made her first start since a fifth-place finish in an allowance race at Aqueduct last November.
Maggie Go (ARG), also trained by Chad Brown, finished second after a game effort, while Ozara (IRE) rallied off the pace to secure third.
