Tyler Gaffalione Set to Ride After Ankle Injury

After a three-month hiatus due to a broken left ankle, decorated jockey Tyler Gaffalione is poised to make his highly anticipated return to the saddle. He is scheduled to ride on Ellis Park’s opening day program on July 3, marking a long-awaited comeback that saw him miss the entire Triple Crown series.

Gaffalione sustained the injury on March 26, 2025, during a post-parade incident at Gulfstream Park when his mount, China Blue, acted up and pinned his leg against the rail. This unfortunate event led to a serious fracture, sidelining one of the sport’s leading riders.

Throughout his recovery, the 30-year-old jockey has been diligent in his rehabilitation. According to his agent, Matthew Muzikar, Gaffalione was cleared by his doctor on June 25 and has been back on horses and utilizing a mechanical Equicizer machine to prepare for his return.

His summer plans involve riding at both Ellis Park and Saratoga, a dual commitment that could see him in the irons six days a week, a testament to his dedication and current health. His agent noted that starting at Ellis Park was a strategic choice, providing a strong base for his return.

A personal milestone also marked Gaffalione’s time away from the track, as he and his wife, Casi, welcomed their first child, Tatum, in late May. Casi is the daughter of Bob Edwards of e5 Racing Thoroughbreds.
