Lea Farms LLC’s Super Chow demonstrated his class and versatility on Sunday, powering through a sloppy (sealed) main track at Monmouth Park to capture the $100,000 Get Serious Stakes.
The five-furlong sprint was initially scheduled for the turf but was moved to the dirt following afternoon rain.
Breaking sharply from the gate under jockey Chantal Sutherland, the 5-year-old horse by the late Lord Nelson immediately engaged in the early pace. He sat just off the front-running River Dog, who hustled to the lead and set swift opening fractions of 22.41 for the quarter-mile and 45.62 for the half.
Sutherland asked Super Chow for his run as the small field of four rounded the turn. The 6-5 favorite responded with authority, bidding alongside a game River Dog at the quarter pole before taking command at the top of the stretch.
Super Chow drew clear under urging and was kept to his task, hitting the wire 1 ¾ lengths in front. The final time for the five furlongs was a respectable 58.05 seconds.
The Jorge Delgado-trained runner has been a model of consistency throughout his career, and this win marked his 11th victory from 22 lifetime starts, pushing his career earnings over the $800,000 mark. The surface change proved no obstacle for the Kentucky-bred, who has now won on fast, sloppy, and all-weather surfaces.
Downtownchalybrown, who chased the leaders from the inside, rallied along the rail in the stretch to close well for second place under Axel Concepcion. The early pacesetter, River Dog, ridden by Jomar Torres, tired late after setting the pace and held on for third. Smooth B completed the order of finish.
Due to the surface change, the race saw a significant number of scratches, including Bel Pensiero (Trainer), Boat’s a Rockin (Off-Turf), Horsepower (Off-Turf), Mattingly (Off-Turf), Spikezone (Main-Track-Only), Sunny Breeze (Trainer), and Vinsanity (Trainer).
