Scott Jordan Appointed as NYRA Head Starter

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) has appointed Scott Jordan as its new head starter, effective May 23, pending final licensing. Jordan, a seasoned industry professional with over 20 years of experience in track operations, joins NYRA from Churchill Downs, where he has served as head starter since 2006.

His extensive background also includes roles at Keeneland, Ellis Park, and Kentucky Downs, reflecting a deep commitment to the sport.

Jordan’s hiring comes after a period of transition for NYRA, which began its search for a new head starter following the dismissal of longtime starter Hector Soler earlier this year.

Soler, who had held the position for 23 years, has since filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination, challenging his termination. While NYRA has not publicly commented on the matter, the decision to bring in a veteran starter like Jordan signals a renewed focus on safety and operational integrity.

“Scott Jordan’s vast experience and knowledge made him the ideal candidate for this position, which is vitally important to NYRA’s racing operations,” said Andrew Offerman, NYRA Senior Vice President of Racing and Operations. “Beyond his skills in and around the starting gate, Scott is a proven leader dedicated to enhancing safety and preserving the integrity of racing.”

In his new role, Jordan will manage NYRA’s team of assistant starters and oversee starting gate operations at major tracks, including Aqueduct, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course.

His responsibilities will include working closely with trainers and riders to ensure a smooth start for every race, reinforcing NYRA’s commitment to the highest standards of safety and fairness.
