John Velazquez to Ride Sandman in 2025 Preakness Stakes

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez has picked up the mount on Sandman for the 150th Preakness Stakes, replacing Jose Ortiz, who was committed to ride Clever Again.

This high-profile change pairs one of horse racing’s most accomplished riders with a talented contender for the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Velazquez, a three-time Kentucky Derby winner and the 2023 Preakness champion aboard National Treasure, brings an impressive resume to Sandman’s corner.

Known for his tactical skill and ability to handle high-pressure situations, Velazquez is no stranger to the intense atmosphere of the Preakness Stakes.

Sandman, a striking gray colt by Tapit, finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby under Ortiz and previously captured a significant victory in the Arkansas Derby.

Owned by a partnership including D.J. Stable LLC, St. Elias Stable, West Point Thoroughbreds, and CJ Stables, Sandman has shown promise as a versatile and determined runner.

His connections are hopeful that Velazquez’s veteran expertise will help the colt shine on the challenging Pimlico track.

Mark Casse, Sandman’s trainer, expressed confidence in the new pairing, stating, “Johnny is a strong rider, and Sandman needs a strong rider. I think he will fit him perfectly.” Casse’s belief in Velazquez’s ability to deliver under pressure highlights the strategic move to bring the Hall of Famer aboard.

The Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday, May 17, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. Sandman, one of three Kentucky Derby participants returning for the Preakness, arrived at Pimlico on Monday and is expected to begin his final preparations under the watchful eye of Casse’s assistant, Shane Tripp.
