Cash Call Answers in Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita

In a determined stretch duel between stablemates, CSLR Racing Partners LLC’s Cash Call dug in gamely to turn back Howin and capture the $100,000 Grade 3 Summertime Oaks on Saturday at Santa Anita Park.

Under a confident ride from Juan Hernandez, Cash Call, the 1-2 favorite, secured her victory in the one and one-sixteenth mile event for three-year-old fillies. The race, contested over a fast main track, saw a final time of 1:43.62.

The pace was established early by Howin, who broke sharply from the inside post and set opening fractions of 23.50 and 47.54 under jockey Drayden Van Dyke.

Sea Runner, with Antonio Fresu aboard, pressed the leader from the outside, while Cash Call settled just off the duo.

As the field rounded the far turn after a three-quarters split in 1:11.63, Hernandez asked Cash Call for her run. She ranged up three-wide to engage Howin, and the two Bob Baffert trainees battled head-to-head into the top of the stretch.

Cash Call gained a narrow advantage in the upper stretch and, despite a persistent effort from Howin to her inside, held her ground to win by three-quarters of a length.

“She raced up close outside the top pair, bid three deep on the far turn, and dueled outside Howin into the lane,” the official chart notes read. “She seized command in the upper stretch and was kept busy to the wire.”

Howin was a clear second, finishing nine lengths ahead of Our Moonlight, who rallied for third under Tiago Pereira. Allihies and a fading Sea Runner completed the order of finish.

The victory was another stakes success for the prolific partnership of Baffert and Hernandez. Cash Call, a Kentucky-bred filly by McKinzie, has now won two of her last three starts. She returned $3.00 for a $2 win ticket.
