Remember Mamba Clutch In Final Strides to Win G3 Transylvania

The Keeneland turf course became a stage for a dramatic late-race surge as Remember Mamba maintained his perfect record in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes in a final that was truly a remembrance of his namesake.

The son of Kitten’s Joy overcame a rough start and a wall of horses to secure his third consecutive victory, proving his place among the elite three-year-old grass runners.

Street Beast took control early, leading the field through an opening quarter in 23.20 and a half-mile in 48.28 while Remember Mamba settled comfortably toward the back of the pack.

As the field turned for home, Honey Dutch looked poised to steal the prize after surging past the tiring pacesetter, but the favorite was just beginning to find his stride.

The colt thrives on extra distance rather than early brilliance, and that stamina carried him through a wide trip into the lane. He wandered slightly under a left-handed crop in the stretch but straightened out once the rider switched to the right hand in the final sixteenth to hunt down the leader.

The winning margin was a widening half-length over a very game Honey Dutch, who has now suffered a string of narrow defeats in stakes competition.

Vasy (IRE) finished a neck back in third after a tactical trip, while Street Beast held on for fourth before being transported from the track in an equine ambulance for further evaluation.

The victory validates the patient approach taken by the barn, which has specifically targeted longer distances for this runner’s summer campaign. The further he goes, the more dominant he becomes, suggesting that his best performances are likely still ahead of him on the grass.

The connections have long believed this horse possessed the quality of a top-tier stakes performer, and his performance on Friday removed any lingering doubts about his class.

While many horses would have folded after finding themselves ten lengths back at the top of the stretch, he simply waited for the wire to show his true gears.
